Why Houston Homes Need a Seasonal Plan
Cleaning a home in Houston is not the same as cleaning one in Denver or Chicago. Our climate brings heavy spring pollen, long humid summers, a six-month hurricane season, and air conditioning that runs most of the year. Each season puts different stress on your home, and a routine that ignores that falls behind.
This guide breaks the year into four seasons and shows where to focus in each, so your home stays ahead of the weather instead of reacting to it.
The Houston Cleaning Year at a Glance
| Season | What Hits Your Home | Where to Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Spring Mar – May | Heavy pollen, spring storms | Window sills, ceiling fans, vents, entryways, a full deep clean |
| Summer Jun – Aug | Peak humidity, kids home, hurricane season begins | Bathrooms, grout, closets, high-traffic floors |
| Fall Sep – Nov | Lingering humidity, holiday guests ahead | Post-summer reset, guest rooms, kitchen prep |
| Winter Dec – Feb | Holiday traffic, closed-up homes | Post-holiday kitchen and oven, dusting, early pollen prep |
Spring: Pollen Season and the Big Reset
Anyone who has parked outside in Houston in early spring knows the yellow-green film that covers everything. Tree pollen peaks from late winter through spring, and it does not stay outside. It comes in on shoes, clothes, pets, and through every door you open.
- Window sills and tracks. Pollen collects in sills and sliding door tracks, then blows back into the room.
- Ceiling fans and vents. Clean fan blades and air vents before the A/C starts running full time.
- Entryways. Wipe down doors and baseboards, and vacuum and mop entry floors more often.
- Soft surfaces. Vacuum rugs and upholstery regularly, especially if anyone in the home has allergies.
Summer: Humidity, Mildew, and a Full House
Houston summers are long and humid. Moisture in the air makes bathrooms work harder, and with kids home from school, every room gets more traffic.
- Bathrooms and grout. Mildew and soap scum develop faster in humid months. Showers, tubs, grout lines, and caulk need regular attention.
- Closets and closed rooms. Rooms that are not used often can start to smell musty. Dust and vacuum them, and open them up occasionally.
- Floors. Summer storms, pool days, and beach trips bring in mud, water, and sand. Entry floors and kitchens may need more frequent cleaning.
- Kitchen. More meals at home means more grease on stovetops, backsplashes, and range hoods.
Hurricane season runs from June through November. A home that is clean and organized is easier to prepare quickly if a storm heads our way, and easier to get back in order afterward.
Fall: The Post-Summer Reset
Fall in Houston often still feels like summer, but it is the right time to undo the wear of the hot months and get ready for the holidays.
- Undo summer wear. Give bathrooms, floors, and kitchens a thorough cleaning after months of heavy use.
- Guest rooms. Dust, wash bedding, and clean guest bathrooms before visitors arrive for Thanksgiving.
- Kitchen prep. Clean the oven, stovetop, and refrigerator before the biggest cooking season of the year.
- Ceiling fans. Clean them before switching direction for cooler weather.
Winter: Holiday Recovery and Early Pollen Prep
Winter brings family gatherings, holiday cooking, and homes that stay closed up during cold snaps.
- After the holidays. Deep clean the oven, stovetop, and fridge, and clean floors and furniture after holiday traffic.
- Dusting. Closed-up homes recirculate dust. Keep up with dusting on shelves, blinds, and electronics.
- Get ahead of pollen. Pollen season can start as early as late winter. A clean home going into spring is much easier to maintain.
When to Schedule a Deep Clean in Houston
For most Houston-area homes, two deep cleans a year make sense: one in spring after pollen season, and one in fall before the holidays. Between those, a recurring schedule keeps the home maintained. If you are not sure how often you need regular service, read our guide on weekly vs. bi-weekly house cleaning. Booking your first deep clean? Here is how to prepare your home for a deep clean.
